Development Model for Mainstream Employability successfully implemented in Quintiles Clindepharm SA

The Development Model for Mainstream Employability (DMME) was developed by ITO Focus (Philip Wilson & Solly Mokgokong) over the last 24 months, aimed at the enhancement of employability of unemployed people in SA, with the emphasis being on youth. The Model was successfully implemented in Quintiles Clindepharm SA between November 2008 and May 2009. Quintiles is the world market leader in Clinical Research, represented in over 50 countries.

A group of 85 BSc graduates from four Universities were recruited and screened to participate in the Clinical Research Assistant (CRA) Apprenticeship Programme conducted by Quintiles, in association with ITO Focus. The 38 remaining candidates were subjected to psychometric assessments and interviews, of which 15 candidates were finally selected for the programme.

Over the 6 months duration of the programme, the Apprentices attended 85 sessions consisting of clinical learning interventions and employability interventions. They were exposed to practical application of their knowledge and skills and also visited clinical sites, where they performed clinical tasks under the supervision of a trained and experienced CRA from Quintiles. Continuous evaluation of the progress of the Apprentices enabled Quintiles and ITO Focus to track and monitor their growth as well as the need for remedial interventions.

The programme has proven to be huge success with all the Apprentices having shown an immense growth and development of their personal and employability skills as well as their clinical knowledge and skills enabling them to enter mainstream employment.

Quintiles shares the excitement surrounding the success of the programme and is currently also considering the possibility of accommodating the Apprentices in various permanent positions in the company, whilst the next intake of Apprentices is envisaged to commence in November 2009.
